Rotary Group Study Exchange Student visits 6EBA !

During late October, we were lucky enough to
have Niki Cleary visit the 6EBA studios.
Niki is  taking  part in  the Rotary Group Study Exchange which sees  people from different cultures and countries  meet up with others in their  profession whilst developing professional and leadership skills and travelling the world.

Niki is a member of the Tulalip people of  north west USA, living in a reservation that truly looks after the welfare of the people who live there.
I was fascinated as she told me the history of her tribe and  the many changes and challenges that have occurred for her people  since the colonisation of her country. As well as being a gifted speaker, Niki is a reporter with  the team that produces KANU TV, a 24-hour 7 days a week television service for the Tulalip tribe. She  also has extensive knowledge of the  cedar. This tree has been used by her people throughout their history, providing clothing, building materials, canoes and much more. Niki has been studying the craft for 4 years and still considers herself to be a novice!

Coming to Australia has opened her eyes in more ways than one. Looking at the situation that Australia’s Aboriginals  find themselves in, she notes that we are many years behind the forward thinking  that her own tribe has  embraced, working with other native American tribes to deliver both cultural and academic education  to their people. What  is important to note is that the Tulalip people fund themselves through  wise investment, taking on the job of educating  and  supporting  the people  that the US Federal government should be financing.

One very important  aspect of this thinking is that the Tulalip elders consider the results of  the developments  and investments they are making now  on their great, great grandchildren,  in fact  keeping in mind the seventh generation to come.

All in all Niki has opened my eyes to how  people  can be successful  and have the support of the community whilst maintaining the cultural heritage that binds them  together as one people.

Some of our recent interviews on Senior’s Hour

Alzheimers Disease

Did you know that last year alone there were  54,000 new cases of Alzheimer’s Disease  in Australia?… and with our population now living longer, we can expect to see  this figure rise steadily over the next 20 years if  preventative measures  aren’t taken. We spoke with professor Ralph Martins from the  Mc Clusker Alzheimers Research Centre to discuss ways of preventing this disease and look at new research that’s being undertaken to treat this debilitating disease.

Raw food

This topic arose after speaking with  Professor Ralph Martins about Alzheimer’s disease and  he mentioned that as a preventative measure we should be looking at our diets, especially lowering fat  and increasing our  antioxidants. After a bit of research we discovered that one of the best ways of getting these anti oxidants and nutrients essential to good health was to eat our fruit and vegetables in their natural raw state.

Raw food may not be to everyone’s taste, but  the health benefits of a raw diet has helped  many people lose weight,… and others  have claim renewed health and energy …just by adopting  this very natural way of eating.

We discovered the green smoothie that can be an adjunct to your normal diet, it’s like a giant vitamin pill!

Here’s a way to get valued nutrients from fresh fruits and vegetables, especially greens that provide us with much needed antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.

In the blender put

2 peeled bananas, 2 peeled oranges, small wedge of fresh pineapple, passion  fruit if you have them. Add half a cup of water and blend. To this add a handful of washed English spinach and blend again to create a brilliant green drink. The fruit flavours are predominant and you won’t even taste the spinach!

You can vary the recipe to suit yourself… maybe pears, apples or persimmons. and vary the greens to your taste as well. Some people use bok choy , kale or silverbeet. I have to say that spinach is my favourite!

Over time you may wish to add more greens to get more benefit.

Eating greens this way cuts out the added oils and salt that are usually the base of dressings for salads. The benefits of the green smoothie have been documented in a book “Green for Life” by Victoria Boutenko. (Link)

What a wonderful recipe for small children and the elderly too. No chewing involved and  maximum nutrients delivered straight to your body. Enjoy!!

History

Local history with the people who know. Our last history lesson was with  Kaylene Poon from the Chung Wah society. She told us all about Chinese migration to WA, the hardships faced by the new immigrants and the subsequent successes that have built the Chinese community in Perth into what it is today.

Seniors card

Margaret Dawkins from the  Office of Seniors Interest explains who’s eligible and how to use the Seniors card for maximum benefit.

Road rules: We spoke with RAC spokesman David Moir about obscure road rules and driver’s licenses for the elderly. Have you noticed lately that many motorists are  getting very slack when it comes to indicating a turn, stopping at stop signs, parking in unusual places and  using mobile phones whilst driving!. Or is it just me!!

Litter reporting: Having travelled the world a little, whenever I come home to Perth, I revel in it’s relevant cleanliness compared to many other places I’ve been …both in Australia and abroad. But is it clean??

According to Keep Australia Beautiful  chairman Mel Hay, our roadsides and waterways are replete with rubbish and cigarette butts are one of the main culprits.   You can help reduce litter by becoming a litter reporter.

The Rockingham Pipe band

The Rockingham Pipe Band has a close affiliation with the City of Rockingham, and is always a welcome part of citizenship ceremonies and other local community functions and parades.

Drum major James Brown now wants to take the band to Glasgow, Scotland to compete in the battle of the bands!

Get Down and Get Dirty!

Christa Roger’s love of gardening has brought her to the Seniors Hour where she presents a fortnightly tips, tricks  and planting segment for the home gardener. Listeners are welcome to call with any of their own tips and tricks and Christa is available to help out with any of your gardening queries.

Healthy Parks Healthy People

I had the opportunity of going for a walk  in the beautiful  wetland setting of Herdsman, in Churchlands. But this was no ordinary walk! There were about 80 other people with me and we had an incredible guide with us, Naturalist Eric Mc Crum.

This is Healthy Parks, Healthy People, an initiative  to keep seniors healthy and fit, as well as addressing  things like social contact and awareness of  the environment. Tricia O’Reilly from the Office of Seniors interest spoke with us about this program.
